The Ancestors send Tarnum to free the Mudlanders from centuries of Erathian slavery. He appoints the Gnoll Brellick as captain, the Witch Adamina as advisor, and trains Droglo, a human boy raised among the Mudlanders. After routing Lords Onsten and Baron Paglon, the rebellion draws the attention of Mad King Gryphonheart of Erathia, who sends his son Prince Niven to crush it. Tarnum captures Niven and shows him the reality of slavery; Niven switches allegiance and is released. Earl Rambert ambushes the exchange and kills Brellick before Droglo avenges him. The Mudlanders' wisewomen name their new nation Tatalia—meaning "community" in the ancient tongue. Erathian nobles dissatisfied with the Mad King crown Niven as their ruler; together, King Niven and Tarnum deliver the final blow. Tarnum and Mad King Gryphonheart deal each other what appear to be mortal wounds, but Tarnum's immortality saves him. He slips away before anyone can confirm his death, and Droglo inherits leadership of Tatalia.
