Walter Feng enlists in the USN and ships to Huffman Island when the territory opens for colonization in 2065. There he becomes close with Randy O'Neill and Glen Duval. Five years later, the First Huffman Conflict tears the island apart — all three experience it firsthand, and Walter and Glen carry its marks on their skin for the rest of their lives. The war scatters them. The Huffman Crisis of 2086 brings them back together.
Walter and Randy qualify for wanzer combat training and are deployed directly into the Second Huffman Conflict. They face Glen across the battlefield. A year later, Glen defeats them in a rematch and kills Randy inside his cockpit. Ceasefire follows. Walter joins Strike Wyverns, reuniting with old friend Edward Collins and reporting to a new commanding officer — Lynn Wenwright, a childhood sweetheart he has not seen since before any of it started. The trail he follows from there pulls him into a global conflict between nationalist movements and a world-spanning globalization agenda, with a terrorist organization called Grimnir operating at the center.
