When the Meiji Restoration brought human technological advancement to the fore, Japan's youkai were forced to choose: remain, retreat to the netherworld, or give up their nature and blend in. The majority chose to become human. Generations later, their descendants were born with dangerous abilities that surfaced under extreme stress, labeled Jinyous and treated as a syndrome. The most threatening were sent to a guarded island facility far from Kamizawa City, where other Jinyous lived in relative isolation. Takabe Ryouichi has been on that island since age five.
