Ayakashibito: Genyou Ibunroku

During the Meiji Restoration, as human technology advanced rapidly, the youkai of Japan faced a hard choice: remain as they were, retreat to the netherworld, or give up their nature and live among humans. Most chose to become human. In time, they assimilated. But their descendants inherited the dormant power of their ancestors — power that could surface violently under extreme stress. Society officially categorized the condition as ASSHS (Acquired Systemic Special Heredity variety Syndrome) and treated it as a non-contagious illness, though ordinary people simply called them Jinyous. Most Jinyous were relocated to Kamizawa City, a walled urban zone isolated from the general population. Those considered especially dangerous were sent to a monitored medical facility on an uncharted island off the Japanese coast. Takabe Ryouichi was sent there at the age of five. Suzu — the only friend he has ever known on the island — carries a secret that neither of them fully understands. Together they escape toward Kamizawa City, hoping for something resembling a normal life. What follows them is more than either expected.
