Psyche's beauty has attracted the kind of attention that makes powerful beings feel threatened. Aphrodite, jealous enough to act on it, places a curse on Psyche that condemns her to marry the most monstrous creature alive. What Psyche finds instead, to her considerable surprise, is a husband who seems entirely human and even gentle. The worst fate imaginable has started to feel like the opposite. Aphrodite has not forgotten, and she has not forgiven, and the trouble that comes from that combination has not yet arrived.
