Bertha

In 1871, author Sheridan LeFanu published Dr. Hesselius's account of Laura's encounter with the vampire Mircalla Karnstein. This story shifts attention to the nested narrative of General Spielsdorf — specifically the story of his niece Bertha, who died a victim of Mircalla under the name Millarca. That story, largely buried beneath three prejudiced 19th-century men, is given its proper exploration here.
