Ridge Racer drops players into an arcade racing experience centered around a single dynamic circuit that transforms across multiple difficulty tiers, from Novice through Time Trial modes that progressively challenge even seasoned drivers. Before each race, competitors select from a dozen customized vehicles—some prioritizing raw speed, others built for nimble handling or balanced performance, several playfully named after classic Namco arcade titles—along with their preferred transmission type and soundtrack. During races, the action unfolds in real-time against eleven rival drivers (or one in Time Trial), with no damage model to worry about; instead, collisions simply bleed away momentum while checkpoint gates scattered throughout the course replenish a constantly ticking timer that threatens to end the race prematurely. As players master the track across multiple configurations and lap counts, winning streaks unlock harder "extra" races on reversed layouts, culminating in confrontations with the mythical 13th car—a nearly unstoppable Devil machine that, once defeated, becomes available for players to command themselves.
