The game draws on the legend of Momotaro, Japan's beloved folk hero born from a giant peach floating down a river. Discovered by a childless elderly couple who intended to eat the fruit, the child explained he had been sent from Heaven to be their son. They named him Momotaro—combining momo (peach) and taro (eldest son). Years later, Momotaro left his parents to battle the marauding oni terrorizing the island of Onigashima, recruiting a talking dog, monkey, and pheasant along the way. Together they stormed the demons' stronghold, defeated the leader Ura, and returned home in triumph. The legend is strongly associated with Okayama, and the demon island is sometimes identified with Megijima Island in the Inland Sea near Takamatsu.
