By the third week, the children of Nagakushi village have traveled far from the mountain roads they knew. The world beyond their home is stranger and more dangerous than either of them imagined, and the trail toward the western capital has grown darker. The oni appear in greater numbers now, as if the dragon has become aware that something is approaching. What the children have learned across this chapter begins to sketch the outline of a truth no one in Nagakushi ever told them: they were not simply orphans taken in by a kind couple. They are something the dragon feared enough to prepare against. The final confrontation is within reach, and neither child will arrive at it unchanged.
