It is 2160, and mankind's colonization of the solar system has fractured into two hostile blocs: the Alliance — built from American, Australian, French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, British, and German forces — and the Coalition of Russian, Chinese, and Middle Eastern interests. The game opens with a catastrophic surprise attack on Fort Kennedy that overruns all four inner planets and destroys the Italian and French fleets. The Alliance retreats to Triton, Neptune's moon, and begins the long fight back. The player is a rookie pilot in the 45th Volunteers squadron aboard the British carrier ANS Reliant, under Captain Robert Foster and Wing Commander Maria Enriquez. Progress brings promotions, better hardware, and the experience of flying alongside pilots first encountered through the game's in-universe news broadcasts — a detail that makes the larger war feel real.
