Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Released2004
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a turn-based role-playing game and the second entry in the Paper Mario series, set in a world styled to look like paper. Players guide Mario through themed locations, solving puzzles and battling enemies in a timing-based combat system where well-timed button presses strengthen attacks and defense. Battles play out on a stage before an audience whose reactions can help or hinder the player, and Mario recruits a party of companions with unique skills while equipping badges that grant new abilities. Brief segments also let the player control Princess Peach and Bowser between chapters.

About This Game

When Princess Peach discovers a cryptic map in the seaside settlement of Rogueport that supposedly leads to legendary riches sealed within the Thousand-Year Door—a legendary portal buried beneath the ruins of a civilization lost to the sea—she forwards it to Mario for safekeeping. Before Mario can act, Peach vanishes at the hands of the X-Nauts, a mysterious extraterrestrial faction equally determined to claim the treasure for themselves. Arriving in Rogueport to investigate, Mario learns the map is actually a guide to seven Crystal Stars scattered across different lands, each one essential to unlocking the sealed door and its unknown contents. Accompanied by a growing band of unlikely companions, Mario embarks on a quest to gather the stars, outwit his rivals, and discover what truly awaits behind the ancient threshold.
