The famous Mario Brothers return in this sequel to the humorous Superstar Saga. In this adventure, Princess Peach takes a trip in a time machine, but when it returns, there's only a monster inside! The heroic brothers travel back in time only to discover that evil alien life forms known as the Shroobs have taken over the Mushroom Kingdom, and no-one is safe! They soon meet up with their younger selves, and set out to stop the alien menace, not to mention rescue the Princess!

When Professor E. Gadd's experimental time machine malfunctions at Peach's Castle, Princess Peach vanishes into the past and an extraterrestrial menace known as the Shroobs breaches through the temporal gateway, laying waste to the Mushroom Kingdom's ancient era. Mario and Luigi pursue Peach through time itself, only to discover they must contend with both the alien occupation and the presence of their younger selves in that bygone period. Forced into an unlikely partnership with Baby Mario and Baby Luigi, the brothers must leverage their combined strengths across different eras to reconstruct the shattered Cobalt Star, unravel environmental puzzles, and repel the Shroob invasion threatening the kingdom's very history.
