In 1943, a mysterious illness swept through a small village and disfigured most of its victims — mainly children — whose parents covered their faces with cloth bags to spare them from seeing their own reflections. An armed group entered and killed everyone inside, then disappeared themselves. Sixty years later, Adam moves to the village of Nevoeiro with his son Charles after a divorce. It seems like the quietest place in the world — until he wakes to find Charles gone, snow falling in midsummer, and a strange old man standing in his home who claims Adam himself invited him there days ago.
