God of War II takes place shortly after God of War: Ghost of Sparta, but more than 13 years after the original God of War. Having slain Ares, Kratos is now the new God of War — yet the other gods refuse to accept him because of his brutal treatment of the rest of Greece's city-states. Still tormented by memories of the deeds he committed under Ares, Kratos finds his only solace in leading and aiding his Spartan army as it conquers Greece. Athena begs him to stop, warning that she can't shield him from Olympus's wrath much longer and that he shouldn't turn his back on the goddess who made him a god. Kratos retorts that he owes her nothing and descends into the battle of Rhodes to fight alongside his Spartans.
