Years before the beginning of Hakuouki, the Shinsengumi was known as the Mibu Roushigumi. A wandering young man named Ibuki Ryuunosuke falls in with the group by chance just after they first come to Kyoto, and while grudgingly making friends with the members within, witnesses the dawning era of the Shinsengumi.

A prequel to Hakuoki. The Shinsengumi did not begin as the Shinsengumi. When the young wanderer Ibuki Ryuunosuke first falls in with the Mibu Roushigumi — grudgingly, and entirely by accident — they are still finding their shape. This is the story of those early days in Kyoto: the bonds that formed before the history was written, and the goodbye that came when they were no longer just another group of swordsmen passing through.
