In 2013, radio telescopes confirmed what some had suspected: humanity is not alone. The Earth Defense Force was established two years later as a precaution—a multinational military body prepared to respond if the signal's origin ever became hostile. In 2017, it did. Hundreds of UFOs materialized over major cities worldwide, with a massive mothership positioned over Tokyo. Giant acid-spitting insects began assaulting civilians on the ground. An unnamed EDF captain in Storm 1—the most highly regarded unit in the Japanese theater—survives the initial air assault on the mothership and begins a guerrilla campaign from the countryside.
