October 4–5, 1986. Rokkenjima, a private island owned by the wealthy Ushiromiya family, hosts the annual family conference to determine how the ailing patriarch Kinzo's assets will be distributed. Eighteen people are present: twelve family members, five servants, and Kinzo's physician. Among them is Battler Ushiromiya, returning after six years away, who reacquaints himself with the legend of the Golden Witch Beatrice — said to have given Kinzo ten tons of gold generations ago. A portrait of her in the mansion's entrance hall bears an enigmatic epitaph: whoever solves it inherits the gold and the family name. When a typhoon traps everyone on the island, people begin dying in ways no human should be capable of.
