Once, dragons and humans shared the world without conflict. That era ended when war broke out among the three largest human empires: the Rutai, the Hologev, and the Highwinds. The Hologev were overwhelmed early and retreated into the Snowdrop Mountains, where they rebuilt themselves as the Monks of Eryndil. The remaining war between the Rutai and Highwinds dragged on until the Rutai created something new: the Dragon Evo Project, which produced the Hybrid — as powerful as a dragon but small enough to manufacture at scale. The Highwind empire fell. Dragons were enslaved. Their numbers collapsed. A small group of free dragons and allied alchemists built a portal to an alternate realm and escaped with as many as they could reach. The rest — Hybrids and dragons alike who did not make it — traveled north into uncharted territory and founded an empire of their own, ruled by the red dragon Queen Maggithon. The Rutai Empire, meanwhile, fractured into civil war. A rogue general defected, returned with an army, seized the Rutai city, and now calls himself its ruler. The fragile peace that followed the original war is breaking apart again.
