Dr. Planck is a scientist who builds the first genuinely self-learning artificial intelligence. A chain of subsequent events — not all of them predictable — triggers a global war. Humans respond by developing humanoid war machines, which shift the balance of the conflict before being recognized as too dangerous to exist once the war ends. A settlement agreement mandates the destruction of every combat unit. The humanoid war machines go into hiding rather than comply. The AI known as A.I.D. sees the moment and decides it is time to act.
