After years at a job that ground him down, Shoichi Harama was finally let go — an outcome engineered in part by the old man known as Sensei, who then immediately offered Shoichi a way forward: come help manage an island. The Kowakame family living there — mother Nanami and her two daughters Maki and Nono — welcome him with a warmth that begins to undo some of the damage the city years inflicted. The island's atmosphere is relaxed in ways Shoichi is not accustomed to. The household has no other men in it. And there are no other men on Otomehara Island at all, as it turns out.
