James Charouz worked in the mines and kept promising himself he would go back home. He finally makes it to Mayoni Village, and his wife is gone. Not gone in a way that leaves traces — gone in a way where the villagers act as though she never existed. A senior detective named Pieter Van Amersfoort agrees to help him look. The search leads James somewhere beyond the village's physical boundaries, into a space that should not exist, where he finds things that make him question not just what happened to his wife but how much of what he remembers about his own life is real.
