Wandering in Space

Five hundred years into the future, Earth is uninhabitable and humanity has relocated to orbital space stations. When the same lethal virus that made Earth uninhabitable reaches the stations, the Federation fractures along ideological lines. The Colonists want to abandon Earth entirely, colonize new worlds, and drain every remaining resource from the planet before leaving. The Reconstructionists want to stay, rebuild Earth's ecology, and adapt human DNA to survive the planet's changed conditions. The Colonists launch a violent rebellion. The war is catastrophic for both sides. When it ends, there is no winner — only wreckage, scattered survivors, and one soldier who wakes up alone in space with no memory of how he got there.
