The Worldwound is a magical rift that allows demons to cross freely from their home dimension into the mortal world, where they prey on the living without restraint. The country of Mendev has fought a series of wars against these incursions — the Crusades — and has been losing steadily, largely because demons killed in the mortal world simply return to life in their own realm, making permanent victory nearly impossible.
