The complication is that in this particular world, using magic is socially awkward in a way that makes competence embarrassing rather than impressive. The additional complication is what happened several years ago, when you caused Things to Happen using Leximancy — a branch of magic powered by language, unprecedented and genuinely uncontrollable — and were consequently assigned to the school basement with the other students whose relationship to magic is considered problematic.
