When the thousandth android—designated 1k—is brought online and celebrated as the realization of this centuries-old dream, a cryptic apparition known as Prometheus emerges to warn of impending challenges, and far-off instruments register an inexplicable energy surge beyond the city's borders. Unbound by the factional disputes that plague android society, 1k volunteers for an expedition to discover the source of this phenomenon, only to encounter a colossal pyramid-shaped structure whose impossible technology forces the androids to confront profound mysteries about consciousness, the nature of knowledge, and what their kind might ultimately become.
