In Adventure City, a scholar named Sybel discovered an ancient parasitic corpse near a hidden altar deep in the forest ruins and extracted from it a rare substance she identified as the Abyss Virus — something that dramatically accelerated biological evolution and demonstrated an extraordinary resistance to being eliminated. The wealthy and grief-stricken Chairman Carter, whose daughter he had lost, bankrolled an entire corporation around Sybel's research: Snow Mountain Biotech, established with the goal of using the Abyss Virus to bring his daughter back. The desperation behind that goal drove Carter to authorize human trials faster than any ethical framework would have permitted. One of those trials ended in a containment failure. The virus escaped the laboratory, moved through the staff, spread to the city, and kept moving. The world that existed before that accident is gone.
