You grew up in the city on one side of the Wall — a concrete structure built to keep the Displacement Zone, and the displaced people living in it, separate from the rest of the population. Your father was one of the few people who crossed regularly to run a free clinic in the Zone before his death five years ago. You have mostly kept your distance from what lies on the other side. That changes when you meet Callie — a small girl who slipped out of the Displacement Zone, hungry, and was found.
