A year has passed since the operation to retrieve Dr. Kirk. Third Energy — simultaneously the cleanest power source ever developed and potentially the most destructive weapon in existence — had proven catastrophically unstable despite the government taking control of the project and continuing where Kirk left off. Then the second accident occurred. The research city of Edward City was obliterated by the reactor's explosion — damage far exceeding the first incident. With the city believed displaced in time by the detonation, the government deployed an experimental time gate device to send a rescue team back.
