John Doe wanders through the desert for days, close to the edge of what a person can survive, until a distant structure resolves into something real: a saloon called the Bitter Glass. He goes in looking for water and shelter. What he finds instead is a place that does not behave like ordinary locations, haunted by the members of a gang called the Demons of the Apocalypse — dead, restless, and each carrying an unfinished request they cannot fulfill themselves. John is the only one who can do it for them. The deeper mystery is the one they keep not answering: who is John Doe, and why will these souls not let him go until they know?
