Eighteen-year-old Maxim Karasev left his parents' home with modest savings and genuine excitement about what independence would feel like. He rented a small apartment in an old, slightly run-down neighborhood and expected quiet and freedom. Before he even unpacked, he ran into a former classmate — Tolik, someone with whom his history had been difficult and sometimes hostile — who now controlled the neighborhood and made it immediately clear that rent of a different kind would be expected. Back in the apartment, the problems multiplied. Sounds at night that had no explanation. Cold drafts from closed windows.
