Zaos was shaped by two goddesses: Adena, of light, order and the stars, and
Zaira, of darkness, will and the deep earth. Their power met in the Trinity
Stones, which bind the mortal world to both. For generations their followers,
the Stellar of Adena and the Drakkan of Zaira, fought over that inheritance,
until the warrior Zena ended the war at the Battle of Airen. Named for both
goddesses and loyal to neither, she founded the Order of Zena, open to anyone
regardless of belief. Today Stellar and Drakkan serve one Empire from its
capital, Galaeth, as rivals rather than enemies, settling old pride in the
arena and in guild wars.
The peace rests on an older secret. In the first age the sorcerer Zurgur learned
to grind the Trinity Stones into StarDust, a substance that rewrites living
things, and with it he raised armies against the realm. Zurgur could not be
killed, so the wizard Numen bound him in an endless dream behind nine seals,
guarded by undying Sentinels. Numen's scribe recorded where each seal lies in
the Book of Yurthun, which was then torn apart and scattered so that no one
could ever use it as a map.
Zurgur's last general, Sauir, escaped judgement, and his followers have spent
centuries hunting for the seals. Now the regions of the Empire are falling into
crisis one after another, and a new recruit arriving in Galaeth finds that
StarDust has no hold over them. Stellar or Drakkan, the player must gather the
lost pages of the Book, stand beside the Sentinels and find out why both
goddesses seem to be answering them at once, before the ninth seal breaks.
