Night Stalker

Released1982
Night Stalker (released as "Dark Cavern" on Atari 2600) is a top-down maze shooter designed by Steve Montero and released for the Intellivision console in 1982. Night Stalker was ported to the Atari 2600 as Dark Cavern and released under Mattel's M Network label. Apple II and IBM PC versions were published in 1983. Robots, bats, and spiders chase you around a maze in Night Stalker, which boasts similar gameplay, if some what slower, to the arcade smash Berzerk. Players must pick up a gun that is randomly placed in the maze. The gun provides the player with a certain number of shots. Once depleted, the gun is again placed in a random part of the maze.

About This Game

A lone survivor awakens in an underground bunker at the center of an inescapable maze, surrounded by natural predators and increasingly lethal mechanical adversaries determined to hunt him down. Armed only with whatever firearm he can locate among five random spawn points scattered across the labyrinth, he must navigate treacherous terrain while managing limited ammunition—just six bullets per weapon before being forced to venture defenseless toward the next cache. As his score climbs, more sophisticated robots emerge to pursue him through corridors and blind corners, each designed as potential kill zones, while a spider-infested web in the maze's far reaches presents both sanctuary and prison, slowing movement and weakening his weapon's effectiveness. Though he can retreat to his starting bunker for temporary safety, even this shelter offers no guarantee against the most advanced enemies that possess enough firepower to breach it.
