Adventure

Released1980
Adventure is a video game for the Atari 2600 video game console, released in 1980. In the game, the player controls a square avatar whose quest is to hunt an open world environment for a magical chalice, returning it to the golden castle. The game world is populated by roaming enemies: dragons, which can eat the avatar; and a bat, which randomly steals and hides items around the game world. Adventure was designed and programmed by Atari employee Warren Robinett, and published by Atari, Inc. At the time, Atari programmers were generally given full control on the creative direction and development cycle for their games, and this required them to plan for their next game as they neared completion of their current one to stay productive. Robinett submitted the source code for Adventure to Atari management in June 1979 and soon left Atari. Atari released the game in early 1980.

About This Game

A malevolent sorcerer has absconded with the Enchanted Chalice and concealed it deep within a sprawling kingdom, leaving a lone adventurer to track it down and restore the artifact to the Golden Castle. The journey unfolds across thirty interconnected rooms and landscapes—castles, mazes, and hidden chambers—where the player must locate essential tools: a sword, three color-coded keys that unlock the kingdom's golden, black, and white fortresses, a magical bridge to traverse otherwise impassable terrain, and a magnet that draws nearby items into reach. Three dragons patrol these lands with distinct personalities and agendas: Yorgle the yellow dragon fears the gold key and flees from it, Grundle the green dragon hoards the magnet and black key among other treasures, and Rhindle the red dragon stands as the most formidable threat, swift and relentless in his pursuit. Each dragon shifts between behavioral states—stalking the player, striking with teeth, swallowing the avatar whole, or falling in defeat—making encounters treacherous and unpredictable. Success demands careful navigation through this dragon-infested realm, strategic collection of items, and the cunning to retrieve the Chalice without being devoured.
