Humanity left Earth and did not return. The robots they left behind — the mechs — evolved over time into self-aware beings with their own civilization. To better understand the creators they had replaced, the mechs developed Moods Modules: technology allowing them to experience genuine emotion. That emotional capacity quickly produced exactly what it produced in humanity: hostile factions.
