Klonoa: Door to Phantomile

The game takes place in Phantomile, a land sustained by the dreams people have at night. When the anthropomorphic Klonoa dreams of an airship crashing into nearby Bell Hill, the wreck comes true the very next day, and he and his friend Huepow — a "ring spirit" — set out to investigate. There they find the dark spirit Ghadius and his henchman Joka searching for a magical moon pendant with which Ghadius means to turn Phantomile into a world of nightmares, having also kidnapped the diva Lephise to keep her from renewing the world with her "Song of Rebirth." Klonoa recovers the pendant and brings it home to Breezegale, where his caretaker Grandpa directs him to seek out Granny, chieftess of Forlock Forest, who knows its secrets. Journeying to Granny — and detouring through the kingdom of Jugpot to undo Ghadius's sabotage of the waters — Klonoa learns a legend tying the pendant to a fabled moon kingdom and "the dream not of this world." But Joka, eavesdropping, races back to Breezegale, bombs Klonoa's home, and steals the pendant, leaving Grandpa to die in Klonoa's arms after urging him to reclaim it as his destiny. Grief-stricken but pressed onward by Huepow, Klonoa confronts Ghadius atop the Temple of the Sun, where the spirit reveals his motive is revenge against those who banished him. After defeating Joka, Klonoa and Huepow reach the risen moon kingdom of Cress, where Huepow reveals himself to be its prince, his ring-spirit form merely a disguise. The pair finally defeat Ghadius, but his death births the nightmarish beast Nahatomb, powered by Lephise and Ghadius's own nightmares; Klonoa and Huepow destroy it and restore peace. Afterward, a guilt-ridden Huepow confesses the hardest truth: Klonoa was never from Phantomile, and all the memories they shared before the adventure were fabricated. When Lephise sings the Song of Rebirth, a vortex tears open the sky and begins pulling Klonoa back to his own world. Realizing their bond was real despite the false memories, Huepow chases after him and clings to his Wind Ring, but the ring slips free and Klonoa is carried home as the vortex closes and Phantomile is restored.
