Some time after the events of Baldur's Gate, the protagonist and their companions — Imoen, Minsc, and Jaheira — are captured by an elven mage named Jon Irenicus, whose motives and connection to the heroes remain a mystery. Held in cages deep within his sprawling underground complex, they are subjected to his experiments, until they seize a chance to escape during his absence. Soon they surface in the city of Athkatla, in the land of Amn, and confront Irenicus — only for a band of wizards to arrive and arrest both him and Imoen for unlicensed use of magic. The heroes' first task becomes raising the fortune needed to rescue Imoen, before facing Irenicus once more and unraveling his true designs.
A party-based role-playing game built on the AD&D rules, Shadows of Amn plays much like its predecessor: you guide a party of up to six adventurers through isometric environments, talk with characters through branching dialogue, and fight in real-time combat that can be paused to issue precise orders. The world is larger and denser this time, packed with locations and side quests, and the game starts you with stronger, higher-level characters — you can even import your hero from the first game. New classes (sorcerer, monk, and barbarian), deeper weapon specializations, and a wealth of new gear and spells expand the options, while as many as sixteen companions — each with their own motives, personal quests, and even romance possibilities — can join you across a story rich with moral choices.
