The world of Black/Matrix II is split into three distinct realms: Heaven, ruled by white-winged angels; a human world populated by wingless, comparatively powerless people; and Hell, domain of black-winged devils governed by the beautiful and compassionate Queen Jenarose, who is said to hold more love for humankind than any other creature in existence. The realms have long regarded each other with suspicion — angels have worked to convince humans that Hell is evil — but the truth runs deeper. Neither the devils nor Hell itself are inherently malevolent, and the reality beneath that fear is at the heart of the story.
