Victor Troska, a former Special Forces soldier, is living a quiet civilian life on Nogova — a battered ex-socialist island once tied to the Soviet Union. But the thrill of newfound freedom is fading: corruption is spreading, crime is taking root, and some have begun calling for the return of Soviet authority. Nogova lies a short distance from the Malden Islands, its natural beauty set against built-up areas still scarred by years of socialist ideology.
Everything changes when a Soviet force invades the island group and shatters Troska's peaceful life. Reluctant at first to return to war, he is pushed to join — and eventually lead — the ragtag Resistance that springs up in response to the Soviet occupation.
