Humanity's expansion into the stars begins in 2250 with the invention of the impulse engine, enabling faster-than-light travel. Centuries of colonial growth follow, fueled by increasingly powerful propulsion technologies—deuterium fuel, then the revolutionary hyper-space engine—until peaceful relations between civilizations give way to catastrophe. A newly discovered element called Xentronium, with the energy equivalent of ten thousand suns per microgram, ignites a war lasting over three hundred years. Both sides eventually deploy omega bombs—weapons capable of obliterating entire solar systems. With known space doomed to be wiped clean within twenty-four years, only a handful of survivors escape through wormholes to an entirely new region of the universe. There they find a single inhabited world, home to a species called the Legorians, who permit settlement on two conditions: each arriving nation may colonize no more than nine planets, and every empire must establish a governing senate. A new civilization begins—and its future is in the player's hands.
