In the city of Piova, it rains without pause. Always. The city is built around music, and young people travel from across the country to study at the Piova Communal School of Music — including Chris Vertin, who left his rural hometown and his girlfriend behind to train as a Fortenist, a master of the magical instrument called the Fortelle. Two years in, graduation is only months away. Chris needs a vocal partner for his required final performance — an original composition — but he has been too listless to look for one. His world has narrowed to letters from home and the company of a fourteen-centimeter musical fairy living in his room. The Fortelle plays in time with the rhythm of the rain. Something may happen when its music finds the right voice to answer it.
