Some young people have begun manifesting an ability called the Ego — a psychic power that allows direct interference with another person's mind. Those without scruples treat it as a game, battling and absorbing the power of other Ego-users. Those in authority are quietly alarmed by people with invisible, undetectable abilities moving freely in the world.
Ryo Matsuura lived his entire life unaware of any of this until his own Ego awakened. His best friend Shuji Fushimi, already an experienced Ego-user, helps him find his footing. A manipulative psychic has been using their Ego to play with Ryo's former girlfriend Hotaru Ashida. Shuji moves against this person alone without telling Ryo, loses, and never wakes up again.
Ryo confirms his feelings for Hotaru, who stays close despite the danger. He faces Yae — who had supposedly died, and who reappears claiming to have absorbed countless Egos to bring everyone happiness. Stripped of the power Yae had given him, Ryo's Ego reverts to its early form. His determination reaches her anyway. The confrontation ends with both of them gone. Hotaru waits, and receives one final message.
