The near future. In Japan's capital city of Chukyo, a colossal tower called Sumeru rises through the clouds and shines black as obsidian against the sky. Rumor holds that people live inside it in a kind of peace that has become impossible to find elsewhere — no competition, no conflict, genuine kindness toward one another. Nobody on the outside can confirm whether any of it is real.
