Mademoiselle de Chardigny has lived her whole life unaware that her great-aunt Jeanne de Chardigny existed. When Jeanne dies, a notary named Monsieur Grellepois reaches out: there is an inheritance, contingent on meeting a series of specific conditions. What she stands to inherit is a stud farm in the village of Saint-Amond — currently in ruins. To take possession of it she must compete in equestrian events, earn the trust of the local community, and restore life to both the farm and the surrounding village. Not everyone in Saint-Amond wants to see the stud farm revived.
