Prince Laharl wakes from a two-year poisoned sleep to find his father King Krichevskoy dead and the throne of the Netherworld unclaimed. After defeating the pompous demon Vyers—rechristened Mid-Boss on the spot—Laharl encounters Angel Trainee Flonne, dispatched from Celestia to assassinate a king who was already dead. Flonne joins the party to determine whether demons can feel love, watched from a distance by the paranoid Archangel Vulcanus who considers her presence treason. The party grows further: Hoggmeiser, a wealthy demon who spares his son when Flonne intervenes; and the vampire Maderas, banished by Krichevskoy for stealing his black pretzels and now holding Etna's memories hostage to force her to kill Laharl. When Etna chooses to betray Maderas instead, the conspiracy unravels. Late one night, Laharl follows the Prinnies slipping away from the castle—and discovers that Big Sis Prinny is his own mother, who gave her life to save him as a child and was reborn in the form of a Prinny to repay her debt.
