Malasombra
Malasombra is a retro-inspired action-adventure game developed by 4MHz
for the NES. Set in a dark fantasy world inspired by fairy tales and classic legends, players control Pirou, a young magician’s apprentice whose wedding is interrupted by the evil sorcerer Malasombra. After the kingdom is cursed and the princess Astrid is kidnapped, Pirou embarks on an epic journey filled with magic, exploration, puzzles, transformations, and challenging enemies.
Blending action-platforming, adventure, RPG, and Metroidvania-inspired progression, the game features magical transformations that grant new abilities, interconnected environments, NPC interactions, shops, hidden secrets, and a story-driven campaign designed for both modern players and retro enthusiasts. Developed over more than five years using a custom NES engine written in C and Assembly, Malasombra was released in both digital and physical cartridge editions.

In a world built from legend and fairy tale, Malasombra tells the story of a royal wedding brought to an abrupt and chaotic end. A sorcerer named Malasombra — long banished by the king for his treacherous advice — returns to exact revenge, transforming everyone present into a frog. The only one to escape the spell is Pirou, a young apprentice magician who managed to deflect it with his humble wand. Malasombra abducts Princess Astrid and disappears. Determined to save the woman he loves, Pirou sets out on a dangerous journey through challenges and dark secrets, resolved to face whatever lies ahead and bring her home.
