The Oracle prophesied that Olympus would fall not to the Titans but to a Marked Warrior — a mortal. The Olympian gods Zeus and Ares took this warrior to be Deimos, brother of Kratos, on account of his unusual birthmarks. Ares lays siege to a Spartan village, interrupting the boyhood training of Kratos and Deimos as Athena looks on, and carries Deimos away. Kratos tries to stop him but is swept aside and scarred across his right eye by the brutal Olympian. As Ares prepares to kill the young Kratos for daring to strike him, Athena intervenes, reminding him they came only for the Marked Warrior, not the boy's life. Taken to the Domain of Death, Deimos is imprisoned and tortured by Thanatos, the God of Death.
