Yoshi explains the crisis: Bowser has discovered the Star Road — the realm of the Star Spirits — and used the Power Stars to scatter his forces across the Mushroom Kingdom. To reach the Star Road and stop him, Mario must collect enough Power Stars to break the seal blocking the way.
