Nearly two centuries from now, an asteroid predicted to be a near-miss shatters against the Moon and rains debris onto Earth. The bulk of the rock eventually crashes into the planet, triggering a catastrophic era known as the Nine Year Winter. In the aftermath, humanity splinters—some nations collapse, others merge into unified blocs—until Japanese scientists sifting through the impact site uncover something extraordinary: crystite, a foreign element that inverts known physics and unlocks near-limitless energy. It transforms the world, launching a new golden age and inspiring humanity to trace the asteroid's origin to Alpha Centauri, where a thriving crystite colony called Alpha Prime is established.
To counter the risk of Alpha Prime gaining leverage over Earth's energy supply, world governments develop arcfolding—a wormhole technology capable of moving ships vast distances in days rather than years. The pinnacle of this effort is the Arclight, a city-sized vessel powered by twin crystite reactors. Its maiden arcfold tears a rift in the fabric of the universe. Through it pours The Melding—a colossal energy storm that settles across Earth in vast, choking swaths, leaving only scattered pockets of habitable land.
The Melding warps everything it touches, and from it emerges a hostile race called The Chosen. The Arclight itself crashed in Fortaleza, Brazil, where its still-active engines generate a protective field—a STIZ bubble—holding The Melding at bay. Players take the role of a surviving human fighting to push back The Chosen and reclaim a world that has been fundamentally changed.
