In a darkened room in Kanagawa, four figures gathered around a candle: a high school girl, a well-built man, a long-haired young man, and a boy still losing his childishness. They are not human. They are the Four Heavenly Kings—netherworld beings who have come to the human world to select a new devil king, the position having been lost in battle against the Light Tribe. Concealed among humans, they have each identified a candidate with the necessary qualities. Now they must evaluate all four to determine which one is the real successor.
