The first time they meet, neither of them has a name worth sharing. The protagonist—twenty, newly diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, admitted to the palliative care floor of a hospital—learns to recognize Setsumi by her green coat and her silence. She is also dying, and she has decided, with quiet finality, that she will not die in the hospital. She will not die at home surrounded by family, either. They leave together in her silver Honda Integra, driving without a clear destination, because the only thing both of them agree on is that the end should happen somewhere of their own choosing.
